How to Create a Stranger Things Inspired Retro Living Room

The Byers & Wheeler Homes

The Stranger Things cast just won big at the SAG Awards. So, let’s celebrate the iconic eighties sets.

November 1983, Hawkins, Indiana. Instantly, the Duffer Brothers pull you into early-eighties America. They borrow Spielberg’s warmth, King’s unease, and Lucas’s adventure.

First, enter the Byers’ house. Dark and light wood panelling, cluttered shelves, and alphabet lights scream 1983. Next, the Wheeler basement: shag carpet, Dungeons and Dragons books, Atari joy.

Meanwhile, sticky cabinets, avocado fridges, and floral sofas spark pure nostalgia. Because of this, sets feel alive. In fact, they act as characters themselves.

Later seasons change, yet Season One interiors stay unbeatable. Therefore, awards keep coming.

Here, I focus on Byers and Wheeler homes. Then, I share Leather & Down pieces to bring authentic eighties magic home.

The Byers' Living Room, Instant 1983

Oak wood panelling halfway up the walls, topped with faded floral wallpaper in soft pinks and beiges. A low ceiling and small windows keep the light warm and intimate, perfect for the glowing multicoloured Christmas lights and hand-painted alphabet that dominate the far wall.

Centre stage, a chunky tapestry sofa drowning in crocheted blankets (mustard, rust, teal), flanked a mismatched armchair in plaid and brown corduroy. A scarred wooden coffee table sits in front, littered with magazines and dungeons and dragons figures.

Stand alone shelves overflow with ceramics, VHS tapes, board games, and family photos, while a towering cheese plant guards the corner. Beige wall-to-wall carpet and warm timber tones tie the whole chaotic, cosy space together, unmistakably lived-in, unmistakably 1983.

If you’re loving the warm, honest, wood-heavy eighties vibe of the Byers’ living room, take a look at a few pieces from our current collection that will help you recreate the look in your own home.

Step Into the Wheelers' Retro 80s Pad

Welcome to the Wheelers’ front room. Here, crisp white walls create a bright, airy feel, while strings of colourful fairy lights. A cheeky nod to Christmas decorations that never came down, add a soft, year-round glow.

Key Pieces That Define the Look

At the centre stands a sleek, bottle-green leather sofa. Slightly shiny and perfect for family film nights, it invites everyone to sink in. Next, two generous butter-yellow damask armchairs flank it. They swivel just enough to keep conversations easy and flowing.

A low, dark-wood coffee table anchors the whole arrangement. Casually scattered with books, it feels lived-in rather than staged.

Finishing Touches

Underfoot, classic eighties shag pile in swirling browns, golds and creams hides every dropped crisp. Meanwhile, a vintage bicycle leans by the shutters, an old CRT television balances on its spindly stand, and large posters of the kids line the back wall.

Bringing a Touch of Hawkins Home

The result? A tidy, comfortable, unapologetically 1983 living room, where the biggest drama is usually who gets the last slice of pizza… until the Upside Down calls.

Of course, not everyone wants bottle-green leather paired with butter-yellow damask. However, if you love that warm, nostalgic eighties suburban vibe, even one carefully chosen piece can bring authentic Stranger Things-era charm into a modern home without overwhelming it.

Here are a few items from our collection that nod to the Wheelers’ living room while working beautifully in today’s homes.
